This is an archival copy of the sound recordings carried out under the Dublin City University Logainm Placenames Database of Ireland research project (Logainm). Dr Brian Ó Raghallaigh is the Principal Investigator on the Logainm project and supervised the sound recording project. LSR was created by Dr Brian Ó Raghallaigh (DCU) and Dr Patrick Egan (MTU) for the purposes of preservation and reuse.

Sound recordings include names of baronies, civil parishes, electoral divisions, centres of population and major natural features (such as rivers, lakes, mountains), as well as townlands in Gaeltacht areas (Irish-language form only) and the main streets of Dublin.

For each county a single speaker was chosen, one who was raised in the county and who was familiar with its placenames. Native Irish speakers were chosen in counties containing a Gaeltacht region. English speakers with fluent Irish and knowledge of the pronunciation of the English forms of the placenames were chosen in the other counties.

These recordings have been selected from the Antrim Subcollection of the Logainm Sound Recordings, and include well-known places close to Belfast.
Belfast Antrim Larne Lisburn Ballycastle Bushmills Carrickfergus Ballymena Portrush GiantsCauseway Source:
Logainm Sound Recordings.Taifeadtaí Fuaime Logainm. Waterford. It was recorded primarily for phonetic purposes. It is one of 30 such items in the Doegen collection. You are invited to copy it and record yourself counting from one to ten in Irish, in your own voice.

This recording comes from the Tionscadal Gréasáin Cheirníní Doegen, The Doegen Records Web Project, wich is an archive of Irish dialect sound recordings made during 1928-31. It contains folktales, songs and other material recited by native Irish speakers from 17 counties. Crucially, it includes examples of dialects that are now extinct.

In 1926 the Irish government asked Dr Doegen to make recordings of Irish speech in the Gaeltacht and in areas of the country where Irish had suffered decline. The Department of Education asked the Royal Irish Academy if it would organize such a scheme (Survey of Dialects) and the Academy’s Irish Studies Committee undertook the task. The recordings were made by Dr Doegen and his assistant Karl Tempel between 1928 and 1931.
Source:
Royal Irish Academy [Depositor]. Uimhreacha.Numbers. Dr Wilhelm Doegen. This collection of short single-story films was produced by Gael Linn from 1956 to mid-1957. They were distributed to cinemas throughout the country on a monthly basis and featured a wide range of contemporary topics, including economic development, festivals, high-profile events, fleadhanna cheoil, sporting events, and local beauty pageants. They offer a fascinating, and often humorous, look back into the lives of Irish people in the 50s, and are a great source of Irish language content.

We have selected a few fun phrases from the films and you are invited to copy them and record them in your own voice.
Amharc Éireann 01 Amharc Éireann 02 Amharc Éireann 03 Amharc Éireann 05 Amharc Éireann 06 Amharc Éireann 08 Amharc Éireann 10 Amharc Éireann 11 Source:
Irish Film Institute.
